Hamza Jalil Albasit

Class of 2016· Author· Karachi, Pakistan· March 19, 2026
Marcus Andersen in Oslo

Hamza arrived at RCN as a Physics and Chemistry HL student, but spent most of his energy in the theatre — writing, directing, and eventually leading the Theatre EAC. The highlight was his adaptation of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge. He went on to study in the US, where he wrote and directed short films exploring urban isolation and mental health. In 2020 he returned to Pakistan and found himself disoriented — the country felt foreign, the language distant. He turned to books, and then to writing. Walking through Karachi, he saw what time had done to his city and felt compelled to document it. The result is The Oracle of Hate, a literary novel blending magical realism and political tension, following a young man pulled into Karachi's criminal underworld during a national election. It's now published across South Asia, with an international release in progress. Hamza credits RCN with teaching him to sit with ambiguity and complexity — the foundation of how he writes.
